As with anything that endures such frequent use, our diffusers need regular TLC to keep them working properly, and to maximise the benefits of the oils or solutions. Unsure of how to keep your diffuser smelling and operating at its best? Read on to find out.

Why clean your diffuser?

Despite what you might think, diffusers rarely go mouldy. This is because of the natural antibacterial and anti-fungal properties of essential oils, in particular lemongrass, eucalyptus, peppermint, tea tree and orange. The good news is, unless you leave your diffuser filled with water for a long period of time, you’re unlikely to see bacteria or mould build up inside your machine.

However, if you don’t clean your diffuser regularly, you may start to notice that it just doesn’t operate like it once did and that the aromas you were enjoying when you first bought the machine don’t smell as fragrant anymore.

That’s because essential and fragrance oils can build up inside the diffuser and corrode the elements they come into contact with. Heavy build up of highly viscous oils like patchouli, rose and sandalwood leave behind a residue which can clog the diffuser and stop it from working until the residual oils are cleaned away. For this reason, our blends are carefully selected, so your diffuser will have a little bit of help from us whilst it's diffusing them (essentially, you get your wellbeing hit and your diffuser will thank you too!)

If you don’t clean your diffuser regularly, you may start to experience confusion between the oils you want to circulate, and the ones that are left behind from previous uses. You won’t get the mindful moment you crave if there’s still residue from your previous oils, as they might conflict with one another. So whilst it can be fun to experiment, keeping your aroma diffuser clean and letting us do the hard work from a blend perspective means you can focus on how it makes you feel.

How to clean your aroma diffuser

Caring for your diffuser is easy. To maintain its optimum use, wipe the water reservoir with a damp microfibre cloth after each use to remove any excess water and oil residue. You can use a plastic-free cotton bud to clean inside the valves and openings. Make this a habitual part of using your diffuser so that it becomes second nature. For a deeper clean, once or twice a month, use rubbing alcohol instead of water to remove any stubborn residue.
