Incorporating natural elements into your home can optimise air flow and quality, make you feel calmer and increase your productivity. What’s more, they are often more cost-effective than artificial alternatives, are better for your health and the environment, and simple to introduce into almost any room.

1. Optimise ventilation 

There’s nothing like a bit of fresh air to blow the cobwebs away, and a Danish study in 2015 proved that a well-ventilated room has the ability to aid sleep quality, reduce daytime lethargy and improve performance in tasks relating to logical thinking. If opening a window isn’t possible or desirable where you live, an air purifying fan can recreate similar effects and reduce those sluggishness-inducing Co2 rates.

2. Fill your home with green plants 

Another way to improve air quality is by filling your living or working space with green plants. 3. Give yourself some natural light 

Maximising the amount of natural light that comes into your home has a number of economical, physical and mental health benefits. Not only does natural light have a positive impact on sleep quality (which in turn has a positive impact on your mood) but natural light also has the ability to improve circulation, regulate hormones and increase vitamins B and D. If it’s not possible to face a window whilst you work, or if natural light in your home is limited, consider increasing the number of mirrors and reflective surfaces to allow natural light to bounce around the room.

4. Utilise natural materials 

Humans have an innate instinct to connect with nature and other living beings, a phenomenon known as ‘biophilia’. Biophilia involves utilising natural materials, patterns and concepts in man-made environments. Implementing this philosophy has been linked to emotional restoration and lower instances of tension, anxiety, fatigue and mood swings, compared with environments with limited natural features.
